Education and degree are two separate entities, which are often misinterpreted. It’s not complex to make a distinction between the two.

Education :

  • Education is the ability to decide between good and the bad, education is about behaving in a mature and responsible manner.
  • One can learn at any age, about the subject (tanked up with the right attitude).
  • To be educated, it’s essential to be able to read and write so you can interact and exchange views with others.
  • An educated mind can think in multiple ways to solve a problem and guide others.

Degree :

  • Is a glossy A4 size matt sheet with your name and percentage embossed.
  • A degree is the gateway to a job. This is the current problem, where lack of proper skills still yields a degree.
  • Need not mean that you have the necessary skills and are job-ready. Again, a crisis in this present day.

Do marks play a role ?

While our parents and society have firmly believed that marks and only marks will make you and everyone proud, the student dies within with laughter and anger. Securing 98% can mean two different points:

  • Either the student is intelligent and boasts exceptional skills.
  • Though the student managed to get 98%, he/she lacks extra skills for the next step.

As far as engineering is concerned, according to a study by AICTE (All India council for Technical Education), over 60% of the admissions were those opting for CSE (computer science and engineering) & Electronics, for the year 2017-2021

Challenges

  • Perception
  • Lack of behavioral and communication skills.
  • Less practical exposure post-college completion.
  • Lack of timely opportunities
  • Add-on qualifications.
  • Overseas opportunities.
  • Domestic issues.

While our government has launched literacy campaigns and programs such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Skill India (National skills development mission), it’s not enough, why? Because on one hand we talk about skills and on the other hand, the very thought of making quick money, often drives most of us in accepting whatever job we get to grab.

As a result, an intelligent well deserving candidate and a commerce graduate, both are doing the same job.

Solution?

It is hard to decipher a concrete solution, since it is the society who needs to think and act suitably. No transition ever takes place overnight. A degree is useful when the theory is applied in real time in life for the benefit of others.
