Logging into work, with great determination to complete the projects and out of nowhere you find yourself surrounded by voices and phone calls. That moment is like “err…why can’t they speak softly?” No matter how focussed you are at completing the task, office places tend to create hindrance for that much needed effective workflow. Imagine you are about to write an important task in your diary for you to to keep a track off, but failed to do so just because there was somebody at another desk talking in such a way that it appears to be shouting. You might want to term it as Shtalking (shouting + talking).

What are these disturbances at work ?

  • Colleagues and other staff members talking loudly on the phone or laughing at the top of their voice while talking face to face or across the desk. It is often difficult to decipher whether it is a quarrel or mere simple exchange of words.
  • Staff are often involved in unnecessary conversations during office hours. Once in a while it is still fine, but it should not eat away the precious office hours because a good part of the business is dependent on the staff along with the capital invested on an employee.
  • There is external noise emanating from nearby construction activities, procession or an event with a mass gathering that seems to be unavoidable.
  • At times technical glitch can also reduce the output.

Can these be controlled? Is there a way out?

Office premises is a busy place where meetings, telephonic conversations and client interactions occur frequently. While some situations are under our control, others cannot be resolved fully.

  • Implementing telephone mannerisms. It has to be strictly followed by all.
  • Avoid gossip. It’s a strict no no.
  • Restricting the use of mobile phones at the workplace, but this is not the solution.
  • Messaging apps can be used if that helps for telephonic conversation (certain cases).
  • Speaking softly. If there is a possibility just close the doors and then continue with the conversation that would not allow sound to propagate.
  • Consider making your office area soundproof if it is situated in a zone where the movement of traffic is always at peak. Some construction activities take years to complete and carrying out business operations in such an environment can be grueling.
  • Ensure that you as an employee are not checking your phone at all times. If it is important then wind it up first before resuming the work.
  • Avoid unnecessary calls, interaction and messaging at the workplace.
  • Awareness campaigns at the office can assist. But, at the end of the day it is self awareness that counts. Were you able to take the campaign seriously? Ask this question to yourself.

Make office a great place to work

Offices are heavily dependent on staff for maximizing operations because stakeholders and clients are ultimately dependent on the parent company for positive outcomes . What the management seeks is proper attention at work and focus on the assigned task, that leads to promising quarterly or annual reports. It should be a joint effort to make the best utilization of resources. Genesis Poweronics, the leading manufacturer and seller of ultra reliable diesel generators in Hyderabad, has joined hands and firmly believes in the concept of focus and productivity at the workplace.
