The black smoke emitted by a diesel engine is a sign of inefficiency in the use of fuel. The reason for that is either too much fuel inside the engine or not enough oxygen to burn the fuel inside the engine. It is natural sometimes to have some smoke coming out from an engine when it is loaded.

1. Overloading

The second common reason that causes black smoke to appear on generators is when the generator works above the specified capacity. This means that in such cases, the engine becomes overloaded and will take more fuel than required; but there may not be sufficient air for combustion.

Solution: Check the capacity of the generator by checking the connected load and make sure that it is within the recommended range.

2. Dirty/Blocked Air Filter

The air filter prevents any foreign material from entering into the engine and also helps regulate the amount of air that enters the engine. This is because combustion requires adequate oxygen to be done properly.

Solution: Check the air filter.

3. Faulty Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors determine the quantity of fuel that gets into the engine cylinder along with its delivery pattern. In case the fuel injectors are not functioning properly, the engine cylinder will contain too much fuel.

Solution: Check and repair or replace malfunctioning fuel injectors.

4. Turbocharger Problems

Turbochargers are common on diesel generators. The role of a turbocharger is to introduce additional air into the diesel engine. The presence of a problem in the turbocharger, intake blockages, and leakage of air cause black smoke.

Suggested Solution: Inspect turbocharger and related air passages.

5. Low-Quality Or Contaminated Fuel

Contamination of the fuel can have an impact on the process of combustion, as well as affect engine functioning. Another contaminant that may affect engine working is water in the fuel lines.

Solution: Use quality fuel that fulfills the requirements and clean fuel lines.

6. Engine Maintenance Problems

Problems with the maintenance of the generator engine can lead to various problems leading to black smoke emission, among which is poor engine maintenance.

Solution: Have the generator engine maintained according to the recommended maintenance schedule.

Prevention of Black Smoke

One of the ways that is highly effective for preventing black smoke is having the generator serviced regularly. The other way is monitoring the load on the generator, keeping the air and fuel systems clean, using fuel as recommended and checking for any unusual black smoke.

The black smoke that comes from a diesel generator is often caused by poor combustion due to excess fuel, lack of air, overloading of the generator or engine problem.
