The purpose of a diesel generator is to ensure continuous supply of energy in the absence of the normal power supply. Nevertheless, there is the possibility that a generator that has been lying idle for a considerable amount of time will encounter problems even when it is not being used.

An awareness of the processes that occur in a generator when it is idle can be instrumental in ensuring that your diesel generator is always available for use.

 

1. The Battery May Run Out of Charge

One of the common problems associated with using a generator that was not used for some time is battery discharge. The generator battery will slowly discharge itself if there is no care or charging of it.

A discharged battery might not allow the generator to start at all when it is needed to start and provide energy in case of power outage.

 

2. Diesel Fuel Can Deteriorate

Diesel fuel can become degraded over time. There can also be moisture and contaminants in the fuel system.

If diesel fuel stays in the generator for some time, it must be checked as well as the fuel system in accordance with the instructions of the generator manufacturer.

 

3. Humidity and Corrosion Can Occur

4. Engine Parts can Degenerate

5. Generator Might Not Work When Needed

Even though the generator will work when it is started, it might fail to perform optimally while under load. Starting up a generator is not enough to prove that the generator can handle the load.

Load test is done to confirm whether a generator will be able to meet the load.

 

How to Take Care of an Unnecessary Diesel Generator

In case the generator is to be kept unoperated for a considerable time, then preventive maintenance should be carried out. It may involve the following:

      1. Battery and charging system check-up

      2. Fuel quality and fuel system inspection

      3. Engine oil and coolant checking

      4. Inspection of belts, hoses, and connections

      5. Search for any signs of corrosion and moisture

      6. Generator cleaning and protection

      7. Carrying out regular inspection and tests

      8. Following the storage instructions provided by the manufacturer

 

There are differences between the maintenance processes of different types of generators based on several factors.

 

A diesel engine cannot be considered immune even if it is not being used. This is because it can be subjected to issues like battery depletion, fuel deterioration, moisture, corrosion, and wearing out of parts.

 

This can however be prevented through maintenance and inspection of the machine as well as its testing. This is particularly important for critical operations, whereby following the instructions for storage provided by the manufacturer is highly advised.
